Youth education and engagement in a virtual environment

Voices of Monterey Bay’s Youth Engagement Project is a series of stories reported and written by high school and college students that describe efforts on the Central Coast to inspire and help young women and men to get involved in their community.

At a time when education has gone virtual, both K-12 schools and higher education institutions are rethinking traditional models of student civic engagement. The pandemic has exacerbated the challenges with creating equitable opportunities for civic education and democratic participation, but at the same time has created new innovations with virtual outreach.

This Youth Civic Engagement Project will include a series of stories during the coming weeks on innovative approaches in schools and on college campuses to promote civic engagement in a virtual environment. The project was supported by the Solutions Journalism Network, a nonprofit organization dedicated to rigorous and compelling reporting about responses to social problems.
