Torén: Tower violates Big Sur Land Use Plan

Regarding the Big Sur tower, thank you to Kate Novoa for writing and alerting us to this plan.

I sincerely hope that the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency will find alternative locations for the towers or, perhaps even better, explore other technologies for accomplishing the job. The towers will likely be a blight on the landscape of Big Sur, and a violation of the Big Sur Land Use Plan.
The protection of this landscape is paramount in the Big Sur Land Use Plan which states:

In all cases, new land uses must remain subordinate to the character and grandeur of the Big Sur coast. All proposed uses, whether public or private, must meet the same exacting environmental standards and must not degrade the Big Sur landscape.

&

It is the County’s policy to prohibit all future public or private development visible from Highway 1 and major public viewing areas (the critical viewshed).
I hope federal agencies take this into account before moving further with this plan. The Big Sur landscape is appreciated and admired by millions of people from around the world each year. There’s enormous long-term value in maintaining it!
