Defund Police? An Interview with Jon Wizard and Matt Huerta VOMB Squad, Episode 5

| FEATURED

By the VOMB Squad

Jon Wizard and Matt Huerta are among the community leaders on the Central Coast who are promoting efforts to “defund” police agencies. Wizard is a Seaside city councilman, while Huerta is a community activist in Salinas. Their efforts are in response to the killing of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer on May 25.

If nothing else, the campaigns to defund in their respective cities have ignited much discussion already. They say it’s an important discussion — and the role of peace officers in local communities deserve a full hearing. Wizard and Huerta are guests in this edition of the VOMB Squad podcast, which this week was Zoomed by host Joe Livernois.

“We are one of those communities,” Huerta told Livernois. “We are one death away from burning this town down. If something were to happen of the nature of what we saw to Mr. Floyd, I can’t imagine what this community would erupt in. That’s what I’m hoping to prevent. That’s what other community leaders are hoping to prevent. The status quo is unacceptable.”

The VOMB Squad Podcast is produced in conjunction with Access Media Productions with the steady assistance of Noa Daniels, programs services manager at AMP. Many of the podcasts will tackle some of the issues we are following at Voices of Monterey Bay. Some of them will be conversations with local people who we think are interesting or cool. And some might take us far afield.
