Grove Market is the heart of Pacific Grove. Pacific Grove General Plan Policy No. One states: “Seek to preserve Pacific Grove’s traditional ‘hometown’ qualities.” Beside that policy is a photo of the quonset hut exterior of Grove Market, with the caption “An example of Pacific Grove’s ‘hometown qualities.’”
“The Groove at Grove Market” captures the store’s essence — the clerk insisting on home delivery for an older shopper, Charlie checking in with customers, and vintage golf clubs displayed everywhere. Not mentioned is there’s never a long line at the check-out, because as soon as more than one shopper lines up, clerks appear from everywhere to man the other check outs. Also not mentioned is the bacon. Oh, that bacon! Charlie first tasted it somewhere in Europe, Belgium as I recall, and now he imports it. Grove Market’s bacon is the ultimate taste experience.
