Open House at Loaves, Fishes and Computers

The public is invited to the first “open house” to be held at the Loaves, Fishes & Computers (LFC) headquarters office, 938 S. Main St., Salinas, from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20. The event is free, and refreshments will be served.

Since 2009, the nonprofit LFC has refurbished 5,695 computers, most of them donated, and offered them at no-to-low cost to the most under-served members of Monterey County, including low income individuals, families, veterans, seniors, people with disabilities and other nonprofit organizations.

Informal, personal tours of the offices will let guests experience a hands-on computer workshop and meet the staff, volunteers and board members, as well as meet some of the LFC clients and learn how the LFC mission has impacted them.

LFC’s research demonstrates that each of its computers is used by an average of five persons, helping to overcome the economic and digital divides. LFC has thus benefited more than 39,800 people, allowing them to participate in today’s increasingly digital society.

“We are anxious to help the public know more about our current projects,” said Christian Mendelsohn, founder and executive director.  “These include digital literacy classes, our digital inclusion and computer reuse project, technical support and computer repair, and volunteer career training and job exposure.

“Thanks to our dedicated community of supporters, volunteers, clients and staff, we are very honored to celebrate the work and accomplishments of the LFC family with area residents,” Mendelsohn said.
