(SEASIDE, Calif.) – Fifty years have passed since the Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County (BGCMC)
first opened its doors to Monterey Peninsula’s youth, serving over 30,000 children and their families since 1968.
Founded by Seaside resident and U.S. Army Sergeant Roosevelt Williams, the Club was known as the Boys Club of the Monterey Peninsula, with “Girls” added in 1990. In 1994, a new 24,000 square foot facility replaced the former
Seaside church that served as the Club’s original base of operations. From there, the organization soared, leading to
the opening of a Salinas Clubhouse in 2003.
Today an average of 600 children and teens are served every day at both the Seaside and Salinas locations. BGCMC staff diligently provides programs that focus on three important outcomes: Academic Success, Healthy Lifestyles, and Good Character & Leadership. Plans are already underway for the next 50 years, which includes expanding services and spaces for teens, improving facilities, reducing energy costs, and deepening the impact of their innovative academic
and wellness programs.
Both Clubs plan to hold birthday celebrations in honor of this milestone on Thursday, March 15, with cake and ice cream.
“To be in operation for 50 years is no small feat for any business, let alone a nonprofit. This accomplishment is a direct reflection of the care our community has for the children we serve,” said BGCMC President and CEO Michael Jackson.
