Free Classes for Families Coping With Mental Illness Offered

Two free classes to help families, friends and caregivers cope with loved ones with mental health challenges will begin soon.

A class in Spanish will begin Jan. 25 in Salinas, which an English-language class in Pacific Grove is scheduled for March 6. The Family-to-Family and de Familia-a-Familia classes are taught by volunteers trained by the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

The courses help family members learn more about their loved one’s mental illness and ways to support them. Information covered during the 12-week courses include schizophrenia, bipolar, major depression, and signs and symptoms. The courses also cover self-care, solving problems, managing crises and effective communication.

For more information about the classes, including specific dates and times, call the NAMI office at 422-6264. To learn more about NAMI, see
