Elaine Giampietro: Blessed and Frustrated About Housing Issue

My SS amounts to $1328/mo. I am able to live in a charming two-bedroom cottage because my landlord told me when I moved in (2003), she’d never raise my rent ($1,000). I do some childcare, elder care, mystery shopping to supplement my SS. I drive a 1991 Toyota with over 260K miles and looks like hell.

I’m in Carmel everyday and see homes which appear unoccupied — for 4 years! I cringe when I see how the Fort Ord property has rotted before our eyes, wondering why wasn’t affordable housing included?

The Carmel Resort Inn — Carpenter and Second — has been vacant for more than a year. Why hasn’t the City stepped up to purchase the property and make it affordable housing? The units are separate, many with kitchenettes, it’s on the MST bus line, plenty of parking. Is the City waiting for a big developer or do they prefer to keep ‘low income’ folks out of the City?

Blessed and frustrated,
