Digital NEST, a local nonprofit providing free technology access and training to youth and young adults in Watsonville and Salinas, will celebrate its 3rd birthday with a public celebration that includes tours of the NEST’s Watsonville center, exhibits of youth work, food, giveaways and more.

The free event takes place November 12 from 4-6 p.m. at Digital NEST Watsonville, 318 Union Street Bldg. B, Watsonville. RSVP at http://bit.ly/2w1DIqy.

In announcing the celebration, founder and executive director Jacob Martinez urged supporters and community members to come and celebrate the hundreds of youth who have benefited from the work of the nonprofit since its doors opened in 2014. “Our youth are already shifting the local economy, being trained in the tech workforce skills employers need, to help end the cycle of limited opportunities and low-wage jobs in our agricultural region,” Martinez said. “We are excited to share with visitors some examples of the work our youth are doing in tech, and the many ways they are preparing for successful careers and higher education at Digital NEST. Please join us!”

Digital NEST membership –open to youth from high school through age 24- has grown to more than 1200 members across its two locations, in Watsonville and Salinas. The two Digital NEST centers are activity-rich, education-focused environments where youth are trained in digital arts, web and information technology, and workforce ‘soft skills’ such as project management and communications. All programs and services are free, supported by individual donors, local businesses, and foundation grants.

Since opening its doors in 2014, Digital NEST has supported hundreds of youth along the path to higher education and well-paying careers. NEST youth are finding good jobs, internships, and entrepreneurial opportunities in technology and tech-related fields because of the mentorship and training they receive at Digital NEST.
