Carmel Valley, October 21, 2019 — Friends of the Carmel Valley Library welcome Steven Webster, retired Senior
Marine Biologist of the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Mr. Webster will discuss “Coral Reefs & Climate Change” at the First Saturday Program on November 2, Carmel Valley branch library, 10:15 am.
Steven Webster retired in 2004 as Senior Marine Biologist at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. He has been involved with the aquarium since its conception, first as Project Coordinator and then as Director of Education and Senior Marine Biologist. Steve continues to volunteer as an interpretive guide at the aquarium, and teaches Monterey Bay natural history classes for staff and volunteers. He leads diving trips to Fiji and Indonesia, noting that he, “Avoids water colder in degrees Fahrenheit than his age in years.”
Steve recently helped form a Monterey Chapter of the Citizens Climate Lobby. The intent of this chapter is to lobby Congress to tax Carbon to the extent it accurately reflects the real costs of Carbon-based fuels, and to stimulate the development of alternative energy sources.
Steve’s presentation, “Coral Reefs & Climate Change,” will highlight the importance of the world’s coral reef communities, and the threats they face from the effects of climate change, over-fishing and coastal pollution. The talk will be illustrated by Steve’s underwater pictures from Fiji, Indonesia, the Great Barrier Reef, and other places.
This program is hosted by Friends of the Carmel Valley Library as part of the long-standing and popular 1st Saturday Series. This event is free, open to the public, and held at the Carmel Valley branch, 65 West Carmel Valley Road. Library doors open at 10 am; the program begins promptly at 10:15.
