Ricketts’ lab open to visitors May 25

(April 24, 2019, Monterey CA) The 2nd of 4 Cannery Row Foundation’s annual open hours of Ed Ricketts’ Pacific Biological Laboratories will be held on Saturday, May 25. The open hours are scheduled at 10:00 am, Noon and 2:00 pm and each session will last 2 hours. Limited reservations are now being accepted and can be made at tours@canneryrow.org.  Reservations will be confirmed by return e-mail.  Though emails are preferred, visitors may also call 831-917-1937 for additional information. Only 15 visitors per session are allowed inside the rarely-opened historic building.

The featured topic for the day is Ed Ricketts’ birthday, which was May 14, 1897.  A brief introduction and welcome will be followed by talks of the Early History of 740 Ocean View (now 800 Cannery Row), the Front Room of Pacific Biological Laboratories (PBL), the Men’s Club Party Room, discussion of Cannery Row in the 1960s and the Downstairs Outside and Inside Laboratory Spaces.  Time will be available to view photographs, books, posters and the model of the original PBL. All sessions and talks will be presented by historians, literary scholars, marine biologists and “Row Rats” from the nonprofit Cannery Row Foundation.

A donation of $15 or more to the Cannery Row Foundation by cash or check may be made at the entrance.  Since 1983, the Cannery Row Foundation has helped to support the research on, and exhibition of, Cannery Row’s famous historic, literary and ecological legacies.

Guests are encouraged to bring cameras, dress in layers and enjoy a rare opportunity to be inside the Lab for sessions by historians.  Refreshments will be available.
