Community Action Board launches fundraiser

| NONPROFIT NEWS

For over 55 years, Community Action Board of Santa Cruz County, Inc. (CAB), has launched impactful programs to alleviate the greatest needs of people experiencing poverty across Santa Cruz County and the Pájaro Valley – including: homelessness prevention, employment and mentoring services for youth and adults, immigration legal services, and crisis response services during the COVID pandemic and recovery.

CAB’s work, in collaboration with dedicated volunteers, supporters and public and private partners, impacted almost 11,000 low-income community members last year – keeping families housed, supporting aspiring citizens with their immigration cases, and helping people overcome barriers to employment.

“CAB Forward!/Community Forward!,” (¡Adelante CAB!/¡Adelante Comunidad! in Spanish) — is CAB’s 2022-23 Holiday fund drive theme with the goal of raising $55,000 by December 31 to support its critical anti-poverty work. CAB’s 2022-23 Holiday fund drive reflects the spirit of hope and sense of community that CAB champions as they face the needs and opportunities of 2023.

“At CAB, community is not only in our name, it stands at the heart of what we do and who we serve,” said CAB Executive Director, MaríaElena De La Garza.

COVID-worsened poverty has required CAB to continue to innovate to meet the community’s complex needs, including addressing the needs of local indigenous-language-speaking and immigrant communities and of youth and young adults needing strong support to overcome homelessness. As a participant of CAB’s Youth Homeless Response Team (YHRT) shared about YHRT staff, “I look forward to coming and seeing your face – you saved my life.”

In the coming year, CAB’s priorities include launching its next equity-focused Community Action Plan dedicated to hearing directly from diverse low-income community voices about their needs, strengths, and barriers to thriving; and further developing its whole family care for those experiencing employment and housing vulnerability.

“The work ahead sparks excitement and hope for our community’s future,” said De La Garza. “We invite anyone to be an active partner with CAB by volunteering, donating, and otherwise engaging in our countywide efforts.”
